The application process

Existing unmetered demand

We are currently trialling a “connect and notify” process for this type of connection similar to the existing process for domestic EV installation. We will clarify this process and make it available on this website once it's ready. This will allow Charge Point Operators to notify us of a charge point being connected to an existing unmetered supply, provided they confirm certain criteria have been met.

We will provide a process for doing this in bulk, i.e. groups of ~100 notifications.

We expect the notification process to be accompanied by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the installer - which we anticipate will normally be a Charge Point Operator - wishing to install charge points at scale. The MOU will be an agreement to work adjacent to our network in the appropriate way.

We assume that on existing unmetered connections where the addition of a charge point does not meet the specified criteria – i.e. the charge point cannot be connected without reinforcement or remedial work, in general Charge Point Operators will consider alternative existing unmetered connections. Where an upgrade of the existing unmetered connection is required to enable installation of a charge point, the costs of doing so will generally be chargeable to the customer, and equivalent to the costs of a new connection e.g. where excavation is required. Therefore where remedial work is required, the financial advantage of utilising the existing unmetered option is diminished, and other options e.g. a new connection are likely to be favourable.

We therefore do not anticipate significant volumes of applications to upgrade existing unmetered supply and will not be setting out a new bulk or automated process for this. However the existing process for new unmetered connections is available if required.

Single phase connection up to 23kW and three phase connection up to 69kVA

We are in the process of developing our application process for these types of applications. We assume that charge point operators and Local Authorities, or their appointed applicant will submit applications in batches of 50-100.

We are currently unclear on the extent to which applicants will wish to use ICPs, and extent to which they plan to self-design, or rely on us for a) design and b) build of the point of connection. We will engage ICPS and Charge Point operators to build our understanding of this, and design customer journeys appropriately.
