Queue Formation

An update from December 2025 on the reforming of the Connections queue based on readiness and strategic alignment criteria.

Reforming the Connections queue

On Monday, 8 December 2025 NESO communicated the reformed connections queue.

NGED is communicating queue positions and the status of individual projects to its customers from 8th December 2025. This includes notification of which projects will receive Gate 2 or Gate 1 offers.

This marks a significant advance in reforming the connections queue, enabling us to prioritise those ready and needed projects across our region covering South Wales, the South West, and the Midlands.

NGED has a newly revised generation queue of ~18.9GW (559). This includes ~9.8GW of Solar, ~1.1GW Wind, and ~7.5GW Storage and 0.5GW Gas or Other.

Through Connections Reform, NESO has removed one half of the NGED connections queue which equates to 20GW of projects (418) that were deemed either not ready or not aligned to CP30 targets. NESO’s strategic alignment process identified 11GW (184) not aligned and the remaining 9GW either did not submit, opted for Gate 1 or did not pass readiness checks.

NGED’s total solar capacity across both Phases remains that of the allocation given for Phase 1. No additional capacity was allocated during strategic alignment - this is due to the zonal rebalancing that NESO undertook in line with the Connections Network Design Methodology (CNDM) section 15.14 and the addition of rooftop collar into the CP30 baseline values (more information can be found on NESO Queue Formation documents).

There was no remaining storage capacity outside of the projects that were protected and therefore as expected, non-protected storage projects within the evidence submission will receive a Gate 1.

The reformed queue will soon be updated via Clearview, providing clarity for customers about technologies and individual schemes and where each now sits.

Thank you to all our customers who have been part of the Gate 2 submission process. We acknowledge that the outcomes of the reformed connections queue will be disappointing for some projects. We will support our customers in addressing questions and navigating subsequent phases of the Reform process.

We will work with customers to ensure clear timelines and engagement for issue of Gate 1 and 2 offers over the coming months.
