These processes may be followed where you are installing micro-generating plant with an aggregate registered capacity of 16A (3.68kW) per phase or less and the installation complies with the Energy Networks Association document ER G98 “Requirements for the connection of Fully Type Tested Micro-generators (up to and including 16A per phase) in parallel with public Low Voltage Distribution Networks”
Follow this process where you are connecting micro-generators compliant with G98 at a single premise. If you have connected within the last 28 days, or are planning to connect within the next 28 days, micro-generators at more than one premises within a local geographic region*, please use the G98 Multiple Premises process.
Follow this process where you have already connected, or are proposing to connect, other G98 compliant micro-generating plant within a local geographic region* within 28 days of this application.
*A local geographic region is deemed to be an area extending for a distance of 500m from each micro-generating plant installation.
The aggregate rating of the micro-generator is deemed to be the sum of the rating of each micro-generating plant at the premises. No consideration is given to whether or not they are likely to be operating at maximum capacity at the same time.
The rating of each micro-generator is deemed to the Alternating Current (AC) rating. Ratings expressed in watts or kilowatts are based on the nominal voltage. For micro-generating plant connected to our low voltage network the nominal voltage is 230V (between phase and neutral).
For example, a 3 phase generator with a rating of 9kW that is designed to be connected to our low voltage network has a current rating of 9,000 ÷ (230 x 3) = 13.04A per phase, assuming the generation operates at a power factor of 1.0 (i.e. unity power factor).
Some types of generation (e.g. PV Solar) produce Direct Current (DC) electricity. Where this is the case they have to be connected to our network through inverters which convert the
electricity to Alternating Current (AC) before it is connected to our network. The rating of this type of generation is deemed to be the inverter’s continuous steady state rating.
For example, a single phase PV solar installation that uses a 3kW inverter is deemed to have a rating of 3,000 ÷ 230 = 13.04A, which is within 16A per phase threshold for G98, assuming the generation operates at a power factor of 1.0 (i.e. unity power factor).
If you require a connection to a new property or require changes to the service connection at your existing property, you will need to pay a connection charge for the associated works. We will send you a Connection offer which sets out the works required and costs for completing those works.
We will fully fund reinforcement carried out to allow the installation of all equipment at an existing premises which remains connected via an existing low voltage single, two or three phase service fused at or below 100 amperes per phase and metered with whole current metering, provided that:
* BS EN 61000-3-2 Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) Limits. Limits for harmonic current emissions (equipment input current ≤ 16A per phase) * BS EN 61000-3-3 Electromagnetic compatibility limits. Limitation of voltage changes, voltage fluctuations and flicker in public low voltage supply systems, for equipment with rated current ≤ 16A per phase and not subject to conditional connection.
You may install and commission the generation before providing information about the generation to us. Once the generation is commissioned you must fill in and return a G98 Installation Document along with an Operation Diagram within 28 days.
You must apply to us using the G98 Multiple Installations Form. It is important that we have agreed all the details with you before you install and commission the generation.
In most cases micro-generation can be connected to our network without causing any difficulties, however, sometimes we have to strengthen our network before the generation can be commissioned. Where we need to strengthen our network you will have to pay a contribution towards this work so it is important that you are fully aware of these costs before you commit yourself to the installation.
Once we have agreed all the details with you and we have carried out any necessary work on our network you may go ahead and commission your generation. You must then fill in and complete one G98 Installation Document per installation and send the details to us within 28 days.
Where the micro-generator is fully type tested and already registered with the ENA Type Test Verification Report Register, the installation document should include the manufacturer’s reference number (the Produce ID).
Where the micro-generator is not already registered, please complete and provide us with the type test verification report.
