New Connections process

Customer guidance on NGED’s process for programmatic on street Electric Vehicle Charge Point (EVCP) connections.

An optimised process for new, programmatic EVCP connections is now available.

This process includes:

  • Self-serve pre-screening process to optimise site selection
  • NGED point of contact for each Local Authority to coordinate work across the business
  • Annual Connection Surgeries to review sites and phase work over the year, to synchronise quotations with customer’s implementation schedule

Pre-screening

There are three steps to pre-screen your sites – pre-screening will provide you with an initial indication of network readiness at each location. Sites that do not meet the criteria are likely to take longer to deliver, could be more expensive, or just may require more detailed network study to assess.

2. Pre-screen Sites

  • Use our online tools to pre-screen a year of sites against 5 criteria that provide an indication of network readiness.
  • Refer to our pre-screening guidance for which tool to use to assess each criterion
  • Refer to our Network Assessment Guide for instructions on how to use the tools

3. Log Data

Log the data collected on each site in the Data Submission Sheet and complete requested site details.

  • The Data Submission Sheet will be the key document to inform your Connection Surgery

Connection surgery

The next step involves meeting a network planner to discuss the sites and agree the program of work for through the year.

4. Obtain Letter of Authority

Obtain evidence of your contract with the Local Authority.

  • We recommend requesting a Letter of Authority confirming your contract
  • We need this evidence to set up a Connection Surgery

5. Make Contact

Contact nged.levi@nationalgrid.co.uk to request a Connection Surgery.

In your email, please include:

  1. Your completed Data Submission Sheet
  2. Site plans showing the location of all sites, named ‘Site Number_Address’
  3. A Letter of Authority confirming your contract with the Local Authority

6. Attend Surgery

Surgery agenda:   

  • Process recap   
  • Establish delivery preferences  
  • Site-by-site review  
  • Agree application phasing  

Application Initiation

After the Connection Surgery, the customer needs to initiate applications in phases throughout the year.

7. Confirm phasing

After the Connection Surgery, the depot will ask you to confirm the contents of the amended Data Submission Sheet

  • Confirm you are happy with the agreed phasing of work
  • You will receive an email template for initiating applications

8. Initiate Applications

Email nged.levi@nationalgrid.co.uk and the network planner from the Connection Surgery to initiate applications – this is your formal application for firm quotations.

  • The application initiation email starts the clock on our quotation timelines
  • Attach your Data Submission Sheet and site plans in each email for reference

9. Receive Quotations

You will receive quotations in line with the timelines set by Ofgem

Ongoing Engagement

Regular communication is encouraged as your program progresses to inform of any changes and prepare for year 2 of delivery.

10. Keep in Contact

Notify your point of contact of any major changes to your planned schedule that will alter your application initiation timetable

 

11. Adding or Amending Sites

If you need to add or remove sites throughout the year, please complete a new Data Submission Sheet and submit it to your network planner point of contact.

Your point of contact will then set up a call to discuss how to integrate these sites into the existing phases of work

12. Annual Process

As you enter the second half of the year, please prepare to repeat the process for Year 2 in good time
