Programmes of new connections – On-Street EV

Customer guidance on NGED’s process for programmes of new connections for on-street EV.

An optimised process and a set of tools are available to all customers, including Independent Connection Providers (ICPs). The process includes:

  • A self-serve pre-screening step to support site selection
  • A named NGED point of contact for each Local Authority to coordinate activity across NGED
  • Annual connection surgeries to review sites and phase work over the year, and align quotations with customers' implementation schedules

Pre-screening

Pre‑screening provides an initial indication of network readiness at each location. Sites that do not meet the criteria may take longer to deliver, may be more expensive, or may require a more detailed network study.

2. Pre-screen sites

Pre-screen a year’s worth of sites to inform discussions at the connection surgery (Step 6).

Use our online tools to check your sites against five criteria that provide an indication of network readiness.:

These checks are mainly designed for new connections up to 69 kVA. If you need a larger connection, it’s best to speak directly with your NGED point of contact during the connection surgery.

3. Log data

Log the data collected on each site in the Data Submission Sheet and complete the requested site details. This will be the key document to inform your connection surgery.

Connection surgery

The next step is a meeting with your NGED point of contact to review your sites and agree the programme of work for the year.

4. Obtain a Letter of Authority

Please obtain evidence of your contract with the Local Authority. We recommend requesting a Letter of Authority confirming it, as we need this evidence to set up the connection surgery.

5. Contact us

Email nged.levi@nationalgrid.co.uk to request a connection surgery.

In your email, please include:

  1. Your completed Data Submission Sheet
  2. Site plans showing the location of all sites, named ‘Site Number_Address’
  3. A Letter of Authority confirming your contract with the Local Authority

We recommend Charge Point Operators (CPOs) lead this step in advance of the connection surgery.

6. Connection surgery

At this point you will be assigned an NGED point of contact for your LEVI programme. They will contact you to arrange a connection surgery, during which we will cover:

  • Process recap   
  • Establish delivery preferences  
  • Site-by-site review  
  • Agree application phasing  

We recommend CPOs attend the connection surgery to input on site considerations.

Application initiation

After the connection surgery, the customer needs to initiate applications in phases throughout the year.

7. Confirm phasing and named customer

After the connection surgery, your NGED point of contact will ask you to confirm the contents of the amended Data Submission Sheet:

  • Confirm you are happy with the agreed phasing of work and named customer details
  • The named customer on the offer will be required to pay and will be the only party with rights to the connection
  • To change the named customer, please obtain a Letter of Authority
  • You will receive an email template to initiate applications

8. Initiate applications

Email nged.levi@nationalgrid.co.uk , copying in your NGED point of contact from the connection surgery, to initiate applications. This is your formal application for firm quotations.

  • The application initiation email starts our quotation timeline.
  • Attach your Data Submission Sheet and site plans in each email for reference.

9. Receive quotations

You will receive quotations in line with the timelines set by Ofgem.

Ongoing Engagement

Regular communication is encouraged as your programme progresses, to confirm any changes and prepare for Year 2 of delivery.

10. Keep in contact

Notify your NGED point of contact of any major changes to your planned schedule that will alter your application initiation timetable.

11. Adding or amending sites

If you need to add or remove sites throughout the year, please complete a new Data Submission Sheet and submit it to your NGED point of contact.

They will then set up a call to discuss how to integrate these sites into the existing phases of work.

12. Annual process

As you enter the second half of the year, please prepare to repeat the process for Year 2 in good time.
