New Gate 1 to Gate 2 process announced, October 2026

Customers with Gate 1 connections projects will find it easier to apply for Gate 2 status, thanks to a new update from our Connections Reform Team. Under Connections Reform, projects were given Gate 1 status where they had not yet demonstrated that they had the land rights or strategic alignment with Clean Power 2030 required to progress to Gate 2.

“Since their initial application, many projects will have been working to secure land rights or demonstrate strategic alignment,” said Kyle Smith, Senior Connections Strategy and Reform Manager. “They may now be ready to move forward and reapply to join the connections queue with the aim of securing a confirmed point of connection, cost of works and position within the gated queue.”

Although the next application window has not yet been announced by NESO, the NGED Connections Reform team are helping customers to understand the process and prepare the information they will need. Our new Gate 1 to Gate 2 page explains the two available routes:

  • Option A: Ask NGED to reassess your distribution offer before applying through a NESO gated window.
  • Option B: Progress through a NESO gated window using your indicative distribution offer when a future evidence submission window opens.

When the next application window opens, a dedicated form will go live, enabling customers to input all of the necessary details to make their application as smooth as possible. Customers can now visit the Gate 1 to Gate 2 page to understand their options and prepare for the application window.

“This latest addition to our website is part of our focus on bringing clarity and transparency to the ongoing connections process,” Kyle concludes. “Supporting our customers as they move through the new gated process will help to unlock the potential of cleaner energy, as well as jobs and investment, for our communities.”

NESO will announce dates of the next application window in due course. The Connections Reform team run monthly customer webinars and will discuss the new window, with implications for our customers, as soon as it is announced. You can sign up for invites to future sessions by joining our dedicated Connections Reform mailing list.
