The new "Connect and Notify" process for the installation of EV Charge Points (EVCPs) to existing unmetered supplies is now available. It allows Charge Point Operators (CPOs) to notify us in batches of charge points being connected, provided certain criteria have been met. This self-serve process involves the CPO performing the required steps to determine if the existing connection is suitable for a charge point installation.
To be approved for Connect and Notify, installers must submit a portfolio of technical documentation, attend a Connection Surgery, and sign a Technical Standards Agreement with NGED and the relevant Local Authority, committing to work adjacent to our network in the appropriate way.
We assume that on existing unmetered connections where the addition of a charge point does not meet the specified criteria – i.e. the charge point cannot be connected without reinforcement or remedial work, in general CPOs will consider alternative existing unmetered connections or apply for a new connection.
Where an upgrade of the existing unmetered connection is required to enable installation of a charge point, the costs of doing so will generally be chargeable to the customer, and equivalent to the costs of a new connection e.g. where excavation is required. Therefore, where remedial work is required, the financial advantage of utilising the existing unmetered option is diminished, and other options e.g. a new connection are likely to be favourable.
We therefore do not anticipate significant volumes of applications to upgrade existing unmetered supplies and will not be setting out a new batched or automated process for this. However, the existing process for new unmetered connections is available if required.
